Abstract

Cancer is one of the most dreaded diseases where the treatment and the possible outcome depend on a multitude of factors. One of the major obstacles in cancer cure is the drug resistance that the cancer cells develop. The resistance can be overcome by chemosensitizers, which can strengthen and modulate the action of chemotherapeutic agents. Natural agents are the chemosensitizers of choice because of the reduced toxicity and the effect on multiple cellular targets. Resveratrol is a potent chemosensitizer that brings in its effects through downregulation of the NF-kB and STAT pathways; modulation of drug efflux transporters; induction of cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and autophagy; upregulation of p53 and p21; and cleavage of caspase. Herein, we discuss the possible mechanisms of drug resistance and how resveratrol modulates it and induces the chemosensitization effect.
