Abstract

DNA barcoding provides an efficient * rn"un, by which many undescribed species that exist on earth can be discovered. lt has been widety used to identify animaI species since its invention few years ago. This discovery is important because understanding the biodiversity is crucial to long-term human existence on the ptanet. However, its use for ptants was detayed because of the compiex nature of ptant genetics. Previousty, scientists had difficu[ties in reaching a consensus on which DNA region, or indeed how many regions, to use. For the first time, the botanists invotved in evaluating ptant barcoding regions have pooled their data to agree on a standardized approach. This involved comparing the performance of the seven leading candidate DNA barcoding regions on a common set of samptes. Ptants are essentiaI to our survival and that of most other animats on earth. lt is easy to overiook this fact because they have become discretety embedded into our everyday lives. Ptants provide us with food, medicines, and raw digested or processed samptes. The methodotogy witt atso be used immediatety to buitd the DNA barcode database for a[[ the species of the world, many of which are of economic and conservation importance. The goa[ of DNA barcoding is to find a simpte, cheap, and rapid DNA assay that can be converted to a readity accessjbte technical skitt that bypasses the need to rety on highty trained taxonomic speciatists for identifications of the wortd's biota. This is driven by a desire to open taxonomic identifications to atl user groups and by the short supply of taxonomists that do not even exist in many groups
