Abstract

Curcumin, chemically known as diferuloylmethane, is a yellow pigment present in turmeric (Curcuma longa). This is a multi-targeted agent that has been shown to exhibit significant antioxidant and antiinflammatory activity through the modulation of several cell signaling pathways which include reactive oxygen species, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2, nuclear factor kappa-B, and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 pathways. Curcumin has been shown to be effective against several ailments such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological diseases, etc. In this chapter, we attempt to summarize various in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies reported on curcumin in different neurological diseases through its antioxidant activity. We also review the mechanistic action of curcumin where it modulates key cellular events that are decisive in the outcome of these diseases.
