Abstract
Antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer effect of the organic extract of Acanthus ilicifolius was examined. Antimicrobial screening by disc diffusion method expressed that the plant is active against K. pneumoniae, E. coli, and V. cholerae (08 and 01) Methanol fraction is active against S. typhii and C. albicas and this activity depend upon the nature of active ingredients in the extract and their capacity to diffuse into the agar medium. GC/MS analysis of the fat free extract showed the presence of stigmasterol and 1, 2 – Benzisoxazol-3- (2H)-one and several other components. The total phenolic content determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method and antioxidant activity assayed through some in vitro models such as the total antioxidant capacity by phosphomolybdenum method, radical scavenging activity using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) assay and reducing power assay. The petroleum ether and ethyl acetate fraction observed to be very effective against human carcinoma cell line -116 where as it is not active against breast cancer cell line.
